A Journey of Mathematical Thought Since 1966

The Department of Mathematics of the University of Patras is one of the oldest and most distinguished departments of natural sciences in Greece. It was established in 1966, alongside the first departments of the University of Patras, and has since played a pivotal role in the development of mathematical science, research, and education in the country.

1966

Foundation of the School of Mathematics and Physical Sciences

On 14 October 1966, Royal Decree 828 establishing the School of Mathematics and Physical Sciences at the University of Patras was issued, including two Chairs of Mathematics. The history of the Department begins.

1966

Teaching Begins

On 3 December 1966, lectures commenced for the first students of the School of Mathematics and Physical Sciences. The first lecture was “On Geometry”, delivered by Professor Panagiotis Ladopoulos of the University of Thessaloniki. Classes were held in a classroom of the newly constructed Second Girls' High School of Patras on Korinthou Street (today's Parartima building).

1971

The First Graduates – Full Development of the Department

On 12 January 1971, the first graduation ceremony of the School of Mathematics and Physical Sciences took place, and the first Mathematics graduates of our Department received their degrees. The Department continued to grow through the recruitment of new faculty members.

1983

Relocation to the University Campus in Rio

The Department moved into one of the new campus buildings, known as the “fast-track building”. It remained there until the completion of the current Mathematics–Biology building approximately a decade later.

1983

First Doctoral Degree Awarded

The first doctoral degree since the Department's establishment was awarded to Vasileios Tzanne, a Mathematics graduate of the University of Thessaloniki and later a faculty member of the Department.

1986

20 Years of Operation

In 1986, the Department celebrated its twentieth anniversary, having established itself as one of Greece's leading Mathematics departments. At that time, the Department employed 35 faculty members (13 Professors, 1 Associate Professor, 1 Reader, 6 Assistant Professors, and 14 Lecturers).

1992

Move to the New Department Building

The Department acquired a modern building with a total area of 24,000 m2, shared with the Department of Biology.

1993

Official Launch of Graduate Programmes

Beginning in the academic year 1993–1994, the Department introduced its first organized Graduate Programme under Law 2083/1992, which formally established graduate studies in Greek universities. The programme led to the award of postgraduate degrees in “Theoretical Mathematics” and “Applied Mathematics”, as well as doctoral degrees.

2018

Launch of Four New Master's Programmes

Starting in the academic year 2018–2019, the Department introduced renewed Master's Programmes, including two departmental programmes and two interdepartmental programmes.

Today

Today, 60 years after the beginning of its operation, the Department of Mathematics of the University of Patras continues to be one of the leading mathematics departments in Greece, maintaining high academic standards, a vibrant research culture, and a significant contribution to the scientific and educational community.
