First-Year Students

Welcome from the Chair of the Department of Mathematics

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics at the University of Patras. In this Study Guide, you will find all the essential information regarding the curriculum, your responsibilities, and the support services available to you.

Mathematical Science is a cornerstone for numerous other scientific fields and applications: from natural sciences and technology to social sciences and biomedicine. The knowledge and skills you acquire here are not limited to theory but apply to practical problems affecting daily life and contributing to societal progress.

Our mission is to equip you with the tools necessary for a successful path, whether in academia or professional life. The aim of your education is to develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and the ability to connect theoretical and applied mathematical tools across various domains. With these skills, you will be able to identify and solve complex problems – a key competency for the advancement of science, technology, and the economy.

We hope your time in the Department will be filled with challenges, creative learning, and personal development. Engaging with Mathematics requires dedication and a continuous desire for knowledge, and we will support you every step of this exciting journey.

We wish you a fruitful academic journey and every success in your studies!

Freshman Registration

Admission Announcement

The names of students admitted to the Department, according to the results of the General and Unified Lyceum Exams (including all special categories), are announced publicly on notice boards of the candidates’ high schools. The call for registration follows the regulations set by the Minister of Education, Research and Religious Affairs and is announced via all mass media.

Electronic Secretariat

Newly admitted students must register via the University of Patras Digital Platform to complete required data, enabling the issuance of a student ID number, enrollment certificates for legal use, and the provision of access credentials (Username/Password) for University telematics services (@upnet.gr) and electronic services such as Academic ID and selection of university textbooks (Eudoxus system).

Technical Support

For technical assistance during the registration process on the University platform, students may call 2610962632, 2610962633, and 2610962636 during working hours. Students unable to access the system electronically may be assisted at the Department’s Computing Center (rooms B/M 0.35–0.40, 0.15).

Student Status

Student status is acquired upon initial registration in the Department of Mathematics and ends with the award of the Mathematics degree, except in cases of temporary suspension, disciplinary sanctions, or withdrawal requests. Students of the Department are considered full-time.

Academic ID

After registration, students must submit an online application at http://academicid.minedu.gov.gr to receive an Academic ID. The system uses the University telematics account (@upnet.gr) provided at enrollment. The ID is valid for the duration of the student status and covers multiple uses, including the Student Pass (for transport discounts or free access to cinemas, theaters, museums, and cultural institutions). IDs are issued at the pickup location chosen during the online application, free of charge.

  • Submit online application at http://academicid.minedu.gov.gr
  • Use University telematics account (@upnet.gr)
  • Valid for multiple uses, including the Student Pass

Academic Advisor

Advisor Role

Each first-year student is assigned a faculty member as their Academic Advisor (AA). First-year students meet periodically with their AA to discuss academic matters, e.g., coursework, labs, curriculum regulations, course selection, or personal issues affecting studies. The AA guides students and suggests solutions. The assigned AA remains the same until graduation.

Meetings

First-year students meet as a group with their AA three times per semester: (i) the first month, (ii) mid-semester, and (iii) at the end of the semester, after exam results are published. Exceptional meetings can be held if required by either party. Students may also meet individually with their AA anytime. Discussions are confidential, and personal data is protected. From the second year onward, regular meetings are not scheduled, though at least one per semester is recommended.

Μ

Transfers

Student transfers and mobility matters are governed by Ministerial Decision 142413/19.10.2020 (Government Gazette 4617/20.10.2020, Vol. B). The process is managed directly by the Ministry, and supporting documents are verified by the Department.
