Internship Programme

Internship is an educational tool that combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience, providing students with their first contact with their future profession. The program was first implemented in the academic year 1998–1999 and has continued uninterrupted as part of EU-funded operational programs, coordinated (since 2002) and managed by the Internship Office of the University of Patras.

Internship as a Course

In the academic year 2017–2018, the Department of Mathematics incorporated the internship program as an elective course in the 7th or 8th semester with code AL462. Successful completion of the Internship is recorded in the Diploma Supplement.

The internship content covers applied tasks conducted by public and private organizations across the full spectrum of a mathematician’s professional activities. This provides trainees with direct insight into organizational operations and prepares them for their professional career. Additionally, the internship:

01

Complements the Department's academic training with hands-on field experience, reinforcing knowledge gained in other courses.

02

Enhances the Department's positive public image nationally, as students demonstrate high academic and ethical standards, confirmed by formal and informal evaluations of hosting organizations.

03

Maintains strong departmental engagement with real-world professional sectors connected to mathematics.

04

Facilitates entry into the job market by managing student flows toward sectors that can absorb or create employment opportunities.

If available positions are fewer than applications, the following selection criteria apply (Department Assembly decision: 7/25.11.2024):

50%

Number of Successfully Completed Courses

Number of successfully passed courses (M) up to the September exams of the previous academic year (weight: 50%)

50%

Grade Point Average

GPA for the above courses up to September of the previous academic year (weight: 50%)

Final Ranking

The final ranking (Ranking Score, RS) is calculated using the formula: RS = [0.5 × (M/36) × 100 + 0.5 × GPA × 10]. In case of a tie, priority is given to the student with the higher GPA among the courses successfully completed up to the previous academic year.

RS = [0.5 × (M/36) × 100 + 0.5 × GPA × 10]

Program Coordinator

For the Department of Mathematics, the Internship program is coordinated by Associate Professor Sotirios Kotsiantis.
